quotations about retirement
A foundation of good sense, and a cultivation of learning, are required to give a seasoning to retirement, and make us taste the blessing.

Retirement: It's nice to get out of the rat race, but you have to learn to get along with less cheese.
GENE PERRET
attributed, Say It With Style
It is so natural for us to consider our presence as indispensable in the world, so long as we have much to do in it, that the wisdom of retiring wholly from employments in advanced life may be questioned. Certainly, he who does so is in danger of finding, before long, that he has only given up the occupation to which he has been accustomed, for the new business of calculating the period of his decease.

Retirement is having nothing to do and someone always keeping you from it.
ROBERT BRAULT

I believe that the biggest mistake that most people make when it comes to their retirement is they do not plan for it. They take the same route as Alice in the story from "Alice in Wonderland," in which the cat tells Alice that surely she will get somewhere as long as she walks long enough. It may not be exactly where you wanted to get to, but you certainly get somewhere.

Just like your wedding day or the day your child is born, retirement is a huge and exciting milestone -- but it can also be terrifying. Retirement is full of unknowns -- namely, the uncertainty surrounding whether you'll have enough money to last through retirement.

What's the best age to retire? It's a question countless workers ask themselves every day. Pinpointing the right retirement age isn't easy, as each choice comes with its own consequences. Leave the workforce at 62, for example, and you'll slash your Social Security benefits should the need arise to claim them right away. But, you'll also get more years of payments, not to mention the ability to enjoy some downtime when you're younger and are apt to have more energy.

Retirement is the number one reason clients come to me for financial planning. It's always a variation of, "Do I have enough?" And it's no wonder why! Everything we read programs us to fear the dreaded retirement. It's as if we have no control over what happens to us when we turn 67. The day hits and there are two paths: those who made their retirement goals, and those who didn't. The 'haves' go on to live a golden hued life filled with travel, golf and rummy cube (I'm not knocking it - I would give anything to play rummy cube all day). Then there are the poor "have nots." These are the ones who just didn't do enough, had bad luck or both. They, needless to say, live a life without rummy.

The difficulty of retirement planning is its parameters -- an undetermined amount of money, to last an unknown length of time, in a highly volatile financial environment including fluctuations in the stock market, the cost of living, medical care, taxes, and Social Security.
