LEAF QUOTES III

quotations about leaves

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came--
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.
The Chestnuts came in yellow;
The Oaks in crimson dressed;
The lovely Misses Maple,
In purple, looked their best.
All balanced to their partners,
And gayly fluttered by;
The sight was like a rainbow
New fallen from the sky.

GEORGE COOPER

"October's Party", Werner's Readings and Recitations

Autumn flings her fiery cloak over the sumac, beech and oak.

SUSAN LENDROTH

Ocean Wide, Ocean Deep

What whispers so strange at the hour of midnight,
From the aspen leaves trembling so wildly?
Why in the lone wood sings it sad, when the bright
Full moon beams upon it so mildly?

B. S. INGEMANN

"The Aspen"

O see yon lovely aspen-tree,
Now trembling in its pride,
Its bright leaves dancing gracefully,
As restless as the tide.

SAMUEL GASQUOINE

Kilda's Bridal: A Tale of the Western Isles and Other Poems

Dry leaves upon the wall,
Which flap like rustling wings and seek escape,
A single frosted cluster on the grape
Still hangs--and that is all.

SUSAN COOLIDGE

"November", Verses

One of the great lessons the fall of the leaf teaches, is this: do your work well and then be ready to depart when God shall call.

TRYON EDWARDS

Light for the Day

O, the mulberry-tree is of trees the queen!
Bare long after the rest are green;
But as time steals onwards, while none perceives
Slowly she clothes herself with leaves.

The dead leaves their rich mosaics
Of olive and gold and brown
Had laid on the rain-wet pavements,
Through all the embowered town.

SAMUEL LONGFELLOW

"November"

So, just for one more merry day
To the great Tree the leaflets clung,
Frolicked and danced and had their way,
Upon the autumn breezes swung.

SUSAN COOLIDGE

"How the Leaves Came Down", Verses

The rain has the woods flush with new growth.... Trees and shrubs are covered in lush, velvety new leaves, giving the whole woods a glow on damp, dreary days. By early fall, when most outdoorsmen and women head to the woods in earnest, the leaves are hard and glossy, some even beginning to turn color and drop for the year. But now, everywhere you look there is just so much life, all of it so vigorous, that it seems a like a different world.

DAVE CIEKOT

"Don't be so goal-driven when you visit the woods", Delmarva Now, May 23, 2016

'Tis sweet to listen as the night winds creep
From leaf to leaf.
