Capital is a result of labor, and is used by labor to assist it in further production. Labor is the active and initial force, and labor is therefore the employer of capital.
HENRY GEORGE, Progress and Poverty
Capitalism should not be condemned, since we haven't had capitalism. A system of capitalism presumes sound money, not fiat money manipulated by a central bank. Capitalism cherishes voluntary contracts and interest rates that are determined by savings, not credit creation by a central bank. It's not capitalism when the system is plagued with incomprehensible rules regarding mergers, acquisitions, and stock sales, along with wage controls, price controls, protectionism, corporate subsidies, international management of trade, complex and punishing corporate taxes, privileged government contracts to the military-industrial complex, and a foreign policy controlled by corporate interests and overseas investments. Add to this centralized federal mismanagement of farming, education, medicine, insurance, banking and welfare. This is not capitalism!
RON PAUL, speech, U.S. House of Representatives, Jul. 9, 2002
Capital is money, capital is commodities.... By virtue of it being value, it has acquired the occult ability to add value to itself. It brings forth living offspring, or, at the least, lays golden eggs.
In the democratic western countries so-called capitalism leads a saturnalia of "freedom," like a bastard brother of reform.
WYNDHAM LEWIS, The Art of Being Ruled
The evolution of the capitalist style of life could be easily--and perhaps most tellingly--described in terms of the genesis of the modern Lounge Suit.
JOSEPH A. SCHUMPETER, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy
Capitalism has given people both the liberty and the incentive to create, produce, and trade, thereby generating prosperity.
JOHAN NORBERG, In Defense of Global Capitalism
For nearly two centuries, scholars and politicians have debated the future of capitalism. Its critics, most prominent among them Karl Marx, have seen capitalism as intrinsically unstable, full of contradictions that will lead eventually to its collapse. Its supporters see it as the best way to allocate resources and rewards. Some even hint that the democratic capitalistic society is not just a phase in the historical evolution of economic systems but its ultimate end.
RAGHURAM G. RAJAN, Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists
The most distinguished advocate and the most distinguished critic of modern captialism were in agreement on one essential point: the job makes the person. Adam Smith and Karl Marx both recognized the extent to which people's attitudes and behaviors take shape out of the experiences they have in their work.
